I just got a reply from Take2 techsupport about my question why a lot of ATi owners have problems. This is the reply I got:
Quote
Unfortunately, in testing ATI cards performed choppy at best.  My
recommendation is to keep both your desktop and game at 16 bit color depth.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience this may cause you, but I'm only being
honest.  The processor in combination with the driver support for ATI cards
is a bit below the nvidia chipset as far as quality goes.

I think I am going to upgrade to a GeForce3 or GeForce4 :(

That's a nice lie.  Considering what, every nvidia card has the same problems?

Maybe the Geforce 3 and 4 don't have as much a problem, but then again neither does the 8500.

Every game on the market works fine.. they just can't program, end of story.

"I'm only being honest"

shame his company wasnt honest on the back of the box

"The processor in combination with the driver support for ATI cards

and that was a lame backheel to ATI.  sure their drivers arent as good as nvidia's, but they aint that far behind. check the Radeon 8500 review on tomshardware.

Did you tell them about how My brand new screamin machine with geforce4 4400 runs no different?

What a f'd up company.

I wish they didn't have so much money from the PS2 version,  if they didn't they might give a who about us PC owners.

Its as simple as this guys, if they don't resolve our issue soon, we don't buy a product from them ever again, not even on console platforms.

Us end-consumers are a force to be reckond with if we all stick together.

yup thats the same reply i got about my 7500.
Shame they failed to warn the consumer about their testing revealing "choppy performance".
Just goes to prove they knew the state gta3 was in before release.
I shall never ever buy a title with RS or talonsoft on the box again. I dont care how good it's supposed to be. This attitude of buy now patch later is not acceptable and is not allowed in anyother industry except computer games.

If i buy a car i dont expect to wait indefinatly for the wheels.

Hang on a minute, this is total Bull!

I have a Radeon 8500 and the game works fine for me apart from an odd CD access stutter which I am hoping to fix by copying the CD2 audio to my hard drive.

I play at 1024 x 768 x 32 with full draw distance, Frame limiter OFF, Fame Sync OFF and Trails OFF.

The rest of my computer is nothing to shout about;

PIII 933
512 mb RAM
Raeon 8500 64mb retail
ASUS CULS-C Motherboard with Intel 815E Chipset
40 GB 7200 rpm HD

I am however, using my own virtual memory settings and have changed my vcache settings in msconfig. (Not just for this game, I always have it like this)

As far as I am concerned, every game I have played, the Radeon 8500 has excelled in performance. I do not buy for one minute the excuse that R* are putting out. If you have a Radeon 8500, do not blame the card. If you were thinking of buying one, do it. Its the best money you can spend and they are cheap now too! Lets not forget that nvidia users are having just as many problems as anyone else.

To be honest, in a strict hardware and driver comparison only, the lowest end GeForce card can run rings around almost any Radeon card.  As far as assumptions go, you can assume whatever you want.  As far as the truth goes, I'm just passing along information that I got in a .pdf format document because they were so secretive in the production that they wouldn't let us know anything else about it.  To be honest, in a strict hardware and driver comparison, the lowest end GeForce card can run rings around almost any Radeon card.  Now, to answer your questions:

1.  To run the game at an acceptable level, I'd say a desktop computer that meets the recommended requirements, with a video card that has a faster processor than most Radeons (i.e. GeForce 2, which now costs about fifty bucks and will last a couple of years)

2.  To receive email notifications on new game information or possible patches or updates, you can go to our website and register here: http://www.take2games.com/register because Technical Support cannot supply information of a patch until an official release has/has not been made.

Right so i would be correct in assuming that even though it was known that the game performed poorly with the radeon cards no warning was given.

I would still like an answer to the following questions:-
1)what specs would i need to get this game running at an acceptable level
2)are there any plans to release a patch to address the problems that I and many others are experiencing? if so how long can we expect to wait?

In the most recent responce from you i quote,
"Mobility is a laptop which is not a high end card in the first place, so the frames you are getting are probably the best they're going to be"

If this was the case I shouldnt be able to run the games mentioned in a previous reply at max settings maintaining a frame rate of 30-40 fps.

Any of you gforce 4 owners care to mention your problems to her??

What a load of crap!
First of all, a Radeon 7200 could kick a GF2's (from ASUS, not GTS) butt hands down (I'm not taking visual quality into consideration here).
I know it because I've tested both cards in 3 different systems.
Radeons 7500 are even faster and far superior to GF2GTS.

Rockstar/Talon surely didn't worry about ATi's choppyness when developing the game nor contacted ATi to find a way to stop the stuttering, via drivers.
Note that every game I throw to my system works like a charm (even Morrowind) at full details. GTA3 doesn't and I need to turn Sync and Frame Limiter ON/OFF during the game to gain speeds.
Some users reported that the game works fine using R7XXXs or R8500s, but I saw lots of posts here and on Rage3D (kudos, guys) full of bad feedbacks.

They (Rockstar/Talon/ATi) better find a downloadable solution to the problem pretty quick and stop with the "It's not our problem" policy.

Let me start with my sys:

1GB Athlon
256MB DDR
ATI Rage128Pro 32MB AGP
W2KPro SP2

Well past the recomended sys.

Who has Max Payne? I do. Same company is it not? I can run Max in 1024X768 32bit with no problems what so ever but I have to turn everything off and set my res to 640X480 16 bit to get choppy perf?

My response: I received the game May 25th. R* knows the issues. If no attempt is made to resolve them in 1 Month(that means a working patch) A) Game gets returned B) Complaint gets filed with BBB. I would suggest the rest of you with similar complaints do the same. As a consumer I see this as fraud.

Under the adpater settings for the ATI cards, be sure to turn everthing off under the D3D and Open GL settings. The game seems to me, it likes to pick these settings by itself with a ATI card. I have had no trouble with it since only if I use a trainer program.
